BREAKING NEWS: JAMES KEEPS GOING IN PEPSI FOR SEPTEMBER 2010! http://www.mdactkids.org/fund-news/pepsi
I have a dream:
There is a magical place where children with muscular dystrophy, a progressive and often fatal genetic disease which limits their ability to walk, talk and play, just like any other kid. For one week every summer, thousands of these special people get that opportunity thanks to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).
MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education.
My local MDA summer camp in Spring Valley, NY plays host to 70 campers every year in a fully accessible, fully supervised environment that is free of charge to the families of these kids. Barriers are broken and lasting friendships are made.
From playing basketball, baseball and soccer, swimming, fishing, canoe and horse riding, to crafts cookouts and talent shows, MDA summer campers do it all. At camp the word “disability” gets thrown out.
There’s something for everyone regardless of ability level. MDA staff and counselors make sure all activities are accessible and safe, so kids can dive in and participate and experience what many of them call “the best week of the summer”.
Since 2005, we have been able to send over 80 children to this special place, raising over $62,515 from family, friends, classmates and the community.
In 2010, our goal is to send all 70 children to camp. But I need your help to make this dream a reality.
